Macworld Apple has done as much as it can to minimize the visibility of the crease on the iPhone Duo, including multiple shifting display layers and a matte nano-texture surface that reduces glare and makes the crease less visible. But physics is what it is, and you just can’t fold and unfold a display thousands of times without any visible crease forming. The good news is, Apple has another solution to help mitigate that: a replaceable outer layer. Speaking to @angietutorials on TikTok, Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron said, “the matte layer does a really nice job of, I’ll say minimizing the crease, but there’s a cover layer on top and we’ve done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long a manner as we can, to make sure you get the most out of that layer’s performance. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”
