Since the early 90s, the Yoshi series has struggled to find its own identity. It started with puzzle games and Super Scope minigames, but the arrival of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island could have laid the groundwork for a killer platforming series to exist outside of the Mario lineage. Unfortunately for fans of that stellar title, the future of Yoshi-centric platformers consisted of a hodgepodge of experiments that oscillated between “games for kids,” touch/motion-based titles, and uninspiring attempts to capture the magic of Yoshi’s Island.With Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Nintendo finally seems comfortable experimenting with a wholly new approach to a Yoshi adventure. While many of Yoshi’s abilities remain the same — licking, eating, butt stomping, laying and throwing eggs — it’s more puzzle game than traditional platformer.
