There’s a line in John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” that seems to sum up our collective attitude toward the state of California winemaking today: ”It never failed that during the dry years the people forgot about the rich years, and during the wet years they lost all memory of the dry years.” While it’s no surprise that, over the nearly 300-year history of winemaking in California, it has had its own rich years — vintages of critical acclaim, recognition through events like the Judgement of Paris — and dry years –– periods of oversupply and bulk-wine glut.
